The painting describes the decline in Australian Insect total number and number of species, with the outer insects incomplete to indicate that some insects are becoming extinct before ever having been classified and described.

Excitingly, Insecta has been shortlisted for the 2024 Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize at the South Australia Museum in Adelaide.
