Pauline Dewar is an accomplished Australian botanical artist, who now produces bright and lively works in a variety of mediums. She enjoys celebrating the natural world, including native fungi, flora and fauna. Her website was launched in 2019 to share her botanical art with the world, and bring her colourful style to your home.

All of the little treasures for this work were discovered in the Victorian bushland, and lovingly recreated in watercolour by Pauline in her Melbourne studio. We are also experimenting with something new and will be including a species list for this piece so that you can have a little fun identifying the treasures yourselves. There are , at the moment, 10 species of Australian Fairy Wren, I find the classification difficult, particularly the chestnut shouldered wrens , which look very similar. Despite their similarity they can usually be identified by their geographical location. Apparently there is little, is any, interbreeding. The white winged Fairy Wren (Malurus leucopteris) has intense blue colouring, but one subspecies located on Dirk Hartog Island, is black with white wings. They inhabit scrubby undergrowth, pictured here with Ruby Saltbush (Enchylaena tomentosa) Joining our Blue Wren are the Purple Crowned Fairy Wren, Malurus coronatus, interestingly this one is the only fairy wren who mates for life and only takes one mate. Also, the Red Backed Fairy Wren, Malurus melanocephalus, the only fairy wren without any blue colouration. The Superb Blue Wren, Malurus cyaneus, makes a covered oval shaped nest, with the entrance near the top. It takes the female about 3-4 days to build the nest. On holiday at the beach, western Victoria, beautiful ocean:) just a bit of work to keep me busy:) Work in progress, the Eastern Yellow Robin (Eopsaltria Australis) makes the nicest little cup shaped nest of bark, grasses and other vegetation and binds it together with spider web.
